Update on Gathering Together Again
April 24, 2020

To TBC Pastors and Directors of Missions,
Like you, I was hoping to hear some clear direction from our governor today regarding guidance for reopening our churches as April 30 approaches and elements of our state are slowly moving forward. However, according to his statement this morning, that guidance won’t be clarified until next week. In light of that, I believe one consideration for you is to review the document the TBMB developed titled,” Gathering Together Again: Questions that Guide Moving Forward.” You should have received that earlier this week, but we are sending it again to be sure you have a copy.

That document will help you assess your readiness, but I believe there are five considerations you should take into account.

·  Ultimately it is a local church decision (both in terms of autonomy and the church’s context relative to the pandemic).
·  Be prudent and make decisions based on the best available information for your area.
·  Consult with local health officials in making a decision as they will have the best understanding of area risks.
·  Consider the potential risks to members and visitors, especially those who might fall into high-risk categories.
·  Be a good neighbor and a good example to your community (What would it look like if you’re meeting and the community is locked down?).
Remember, just because steps are being taken to slowly open elements of our communities, not everything is opening, such as places where large numbers of people closely gather like sporting events, theatres and churches. Also, the April 30 adjustment to the governor’s stay at home order does not equate to an all clear. We are still operating in unchartered waters and your decision to move forward must be preceded by prayer and wisdom.
As always, we are here to serve you in any way we can. Please stay tuned. We hope to have updated info to send you early next week. It is a joy to be on this journey with you even in these challenging days.
